Threatened Species Earrings

This color scheme and overall design of this earring was inspired by Mondrian’s artwork.

Every colored rectangle represents a grouping of species into classes, with each bead representing a number of species rounded to the nearest whole. For the large version that is 50 species per bead and for the mini version that is 125 species per bead. Thus the size of the colored rectangle indicates the population size of that class.

The color of the rectangle indicates the percent of threatened species within that group. Please see the color legend.

This data is representative of only the groups that have at least 150 species and reports extant species only, for which at least 80% of the population has been evaluated by IUCN teams. You can read more about the particulars that went into this analysis on IUCN’s site here and the reasons why the data was reported this way.
