Description
There are 300 beads total representing the population that answered questions regarding race on the 2011 National Park visitor surveys. Each color of bead represents a racial group that visited the National Parks, described below.
White visitors – 95% of the total, 285 white beads
Asian visitors – 2% of the total, 6 black beads
Native American visitors – 2% of the total, 6 topaz beads
Black visitors – 1% of the total, 3 gold beads
Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders – <1% so aren’t represented on the earrings
These statistics clearly point out that exclusivity and lack of diversity in the outdoors are very much real. There is work to be done in first understanding how we got here and then making changes towards inclusivity and accessibility.
